Facebook Plugin Could Change the Way You Read News
Facebook Plugin Could Change the Way You Read News stocksnap.io De, a student at the University of Massachusetts, attended a hackathon at Princeton University this week. The prompt? Develop a technology project in a time period of 36 hours. She also suggested that her teammates build an algorithm that would authenticate real vs fake on Facebook. And she and her team did it. De, Anant Goel (Purdue University), Mark Craft and Qinglin Chen (University of Illinois) created an extension in a Chrome browser that will tag links in Facebook with âverifiedâ or ânot verified.â This is done by considering factors such as âthe sourceâs credibility and cross-checking the content with other news stories.â And if a link isnât verified? The plugin also provides a summary of credible information on the same topic, to help clarify what the actual news is. And of course, it has a fantastic name: FiB. And because the students are still in school and only had a little over a day to create this plugin, theyâve released this as an âopen-source project.â This means that it can be improved by anyone with the experience to do so. And the plugin is available for the masses, but they canât meet the high demand on their own. So FiB isnât currently up and running for everyone to use. But the idea is there, and the content is sure to follow quickly, especially with this type of demand. According to Goel, the idea is that Facebook would eventually work with third-party developers to manage news articles on the site themselves. The Princeton hackathon was sponsored by Facebook, as well as other tech vendors, but hasnât reported reaching out to FiB to help in any way. Same goes for Google, who has been having the same problems. However, both companies have stated that they are going to âtake stepsâ to fix the problem at hand. But the problem is a big one, and itâs only getting worse for the time being. According to BuzzFeed News, over 100 sites made up pro-Trump content (which was traced to Macedonia). In a Washington Post interview of Paul Horner, a fake-news creator, he stated, âI think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers donât fact-check anything theyâll post everything, believe anything.â And Melissa Zimdars, professor at Merrimack College in MA, also says sheâs seen this problem when her students go to site references for essays. She made the following list, which has gone viral, as a warning to students looking at fake news sites: â¢Watch out if known/reputable news sites are not also reporting on the story. Sometimes lack of coverage is the result of corporate media bias and other factors, but there should typically be more than one source reporting on a topic or event. â¢If the story makes you REALLY ANGRY itâs probably a good idea to keep reading about the topic via other sources to make sure the story you read wasnât purposefully trying to make you angry (with potentially misleading or false information) in order to generate shares and ad revenue. She also stated that it doesnât help when news media uses click-bait headlines and that itâs nearly impossible to distinguish these from fake stories. Thereâs also the issue of whether or not people even know theyâre sharing fake links. According to Paul Mihailidis, teacher at Emerson College: âI donât think a lot of people didnât know; I think they didnât care. They saw it as a way to advocate. The more they could spread rumors, or could advocate for their value system or candidate, that took precedent over them not knowing. A large portion of them didnât stop to critique the information. One of the things that has happened is people are scrolling through [Facebook] and the notion of deep reading is being replaced by deep monitoring. They see a catchy headline, and the default is to share.â However, this isnât the only problem. Thereâs also the fact that people scrolling through their news feed on a social media site arenât necessarily looking to fact-check, which means they arenât looking up stories to verify whether or not theyâre true. So in this way, the plugin is a perfect solution. According to De: âA few days back, I read an article telling people they can drill a jack in the iPhone7 and have an earphone plug, and people started doing it and ruining their phones. We know we can search on Google and research it, but if you have five minutes and youâre just scrolling through Facebook, you donât have time to go verify it.â

Self-learning and Determination Has Helped This Boy Scout Overcome Challenges
Self-learning and Determination Has Helped This Boy Scout Overcome Challenges Self-learning and Determination Has Helped This Boy Scout Overcome Challenges Ryan, 13-years-old, Math Level L, Reading Program Completer For over 100 years, The Boy Scouts of America has aimed to foster the youth of America by developing responsible citizens through outdoor activities, educational programs, philanthropic work, and career-orientated programs. The scouting method instills the values of trustworthiness, good citizenship, and outdoor skills in every scout. To advance in ranking, scouts must follow the scouting method which encourages members for continuous involvement and commitment â" in order to grow in self-reliance and the ability to help others. For Ryan, he found that he was able to use many of the valuable skills he acquired from Kumon, such as self-learning, in scouting. In the advancement of ranking, he has seen many of the challenges as learning opportunities just like advancing through each level of Kumon. Three years ago, Ryan began his Kumon journey and has since made remarkable strides. Currently, heâs studying the introduction of calculus and working on concepts like basic differentiation and integration in the Kumon Math Program. Committed to reaching a goal, Ryan persevered and completed the Kumon Reading Program in under three years. Before even entering high school, he now has a solid grasp on literature, having already analyzed notable literary works such as William Goldingâs Lord of the Flies and Arthur Millerâs play, Death of a Salesman. Ryanâs academic edge has set him apart from his peers and paved the way for continued academic success. He credits Kumon for gaining a sense of independence and being able to work through any challenge whether itâs in school, boy scouts, or sports. âKumon has helped me outside of the classroom in many different ways,â said Ryan. âWhether I am in boy scouts when I am learning a new skill for a new merit badge, or practicing my shooting skills in soccer, I have learned to persevere even when it becomes challenging. Like in Kumon, I learned that repetition and practice have helped me master skills.â In scouts, Ryan has found great joy in outdoor activities such as camping and receiving new merit badges. When heâs not on his next camping trip, Ryan is embracing his talents as a musician. Two years ago, Ryan began playing the cello and already has reached monumental moments early in his career. He is proud to say that he passed through the rigorous audition process to have a seat in the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Associationâs Junior District 12 Orchestra. The top middle school-aged musicians from the audition are selected within the district to play with this prestigious orchestra. The musicians are judged on sight reading skills like harmonic structure, rhythm, and style. Ryanâs advanced math skills were noticed by his teachers in school â" resulting in him being selected in sixth grade to represent his school at the MATHCOUNTS Competition. This non-profit organization prides themselves on making math fun and getting students to overcome any fear they have of it. In their competition, the brightest students from across the country come together to compete in a unique competition series â" challenging students to further build their problem-solving skills. Ryanâs drive and desire to help others will help him reach his goal of one day becoming a doctor. âWhen I grow up, I want to be a doctor because I want to help people,â said Ryan. âI always find joy in talking to people and finding out what kinds of interests they have. I have always wanted to help people, and I feel that seeing a smile on someoneâs face is always worth it.â Ryanâs hard work and discipline didnât go unnoticed, as he was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. How to Adjust to Dorm Life
How to Adjust to Dorm Life There are many rites of passage every college freshman goes through one of the most famous being living in the dorms. Most (very close to all) universities require freshmen to live in dorms; but even if they dont, it is strongly advised that you do so anyway. Although R.A.s watching over you in extremely close-quarters may seem unappealing and freedom-killing at first, there are many other factors to dorm life that really do make it the ideal living situation for your first year away at school. Its a great environment to sky-rocket your social life and also gives you the perks of living on your own while still sheltering you from certain real-world responsibilities (paying bills, cleaning bathrooms, etc.). Successfully adapting to dorm life is a big adjustment that cannot be underestimated, however. After all, it is extremely different from any other living situation youve ever had and probably ever will have. So, here are some important tips to take note of before moving into your new residence. Understand Your Roommate: Dorm roommates honestly require an entirely different discussion of their own, but to put it in basic terms give your roommate a chance. Whether youve set things up to live with your best friend from high school, selected a random roommate, or met this person through your colleges Facebook group, this is probably your first experience living with somebody other than your family and therefore is completely new territory. Even if you really like the person beforehand, living with them can be a different experience. With that being said, it is crucial that you adequately get to know your roommate initially and have an open mind about them. Try to push any preconceived judgments out of your mind, and allow yourself time to discover what this person is really like. Do they stay up late into the night? Are they morning people? Are they extremely private or do they like to be in your face all the time? Are they messy or clean? There are endless aspects of a person s living habits that you need to recognize in order to co-exist with them contently. Also, communicate with them; they deserve to learn about you as well. You may be lucky and not be bothered be each others habits, you may differ in habits but find easy mediums to work with, or you might find these differences intolerable and need to take further action. Whatever the outcome, it is just important that you figure it out as quickly as possible so you can spend your school year living comfortably. Adjust to the minimal space: One of the hardest things to adjust to regarding dorm life is certainly the lack of wide-open space. In essence, you will be sharing an abnormally small room that feels even too small for just yourself, with another person. This will seem inevitably frustrating, but you will surprisingly get used to it. You will make things a lot easier on yourself, however, if you organize. This means making sure that your furniture and other various items are placed in ways that give you more leg room rather than limiting it further. Also, decorating can do wonders for improving the overall feel. A cozy rug or bright lamp can make the place a lot more homey and distract you from its less than favorable space constraints. Overall, if you make the room a comfortable place that you enjoy the atmosphere of, you will appreciate its collegiate feel and find yourself thinking/worrying less about its size. More importantly, dont be a hermit. Remember to get out and experience l ife outside those walls all over campus. The more time you spend away from your room, the more youll appreciate its reassuring vibe when you return to it. Get to Know Your Floor: This ties back to the social aspect of dorm life. You will be living on a floor with several other students, all of whom are living in cracker box-sized rooms as well and have the same concerns, fears, and excitement about college. One of the biggest mistakes you could make is cutting yourself off from these people. When in youre in your room, leave your door open occasionally. This is an extremely common tactic in dorms to show you are open to neighbors stopping by to hang out. Its an open invitation that says Id love to meet and get to know you guys without actually having to put yourself out there and say it. Your floormates will inevitably be doing this as well, so make sure you take a stroll down the hall every now and then as well to say hello. Plus, your R.A. will typically plan various floor activities, meetings, outings, etc. These are even better ways to meet your neighbors, especially if youre too shy to practice the literal open-door policy. Even i f youre best friends with your roommate or have gone Greek and created a social circle already, you should still get to know your floormates. This is one of the easiest opportunities youll ever have to make friends, and youll be happy to have friends in such close proximity when youre out of Easy Mac at 1 A.M. or lonely with no plans one weekend. There will always be someone down the hall to help you out; embrace that. Dont Write Off Your R.A.: That older student living on your floor with the sign Resident Advisor on their door is a fantastic resource that you should not overlook. R.A.s are specifically there to offer you guidance, be a mentor, talk you through whatever issues you may be having. Although you may want to act tough and claim youre never homesick, have no academic struggles, and got the college social life nailed down you're bound to have weak points; everybody does. Every student has those moments when theyre emotionally worn down from the stress college induces, and its okay to consult your R.A. Dont be shy about it or hesitant just because it may not seem like the cool thing to do. R.A.s wouldnt have a job if students didnt truly need them at times, so at least stop by in the beginning of the year to personally say hello and get to know them a little bit. Your R.A. will typically begin the year with a big get-to-know-you meeting with the entire floor to get this done - do not skip that, by the way but you should still visit them on your own at some point. If anything, youve made another connection.
A Student Review of Harvard University
A Student Review of Harvard University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Lauren graduated from Harvard University in 2013 where she earned a Bachelors degree in Anthropology. She currently tutors several subjects in Washington D.C., specializing inAP U.S. History tutoring, French tutoring, and Essay Editing tutoring. Check out her review of Harvard University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Lauren: The campus is embedded in the historical city of Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston. You have easy access to the Boston subway and bus system, but Cambridge and the campus itself are extremely walkable with many bike paths. I love that Cambridge has all the excitement and entertainment of city life, but that it retains the charm and history that makes it special. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Lauren: While professors are a little busier, they constantly offer scheduled office hours, and they are eager to talk with students. They are so pleased when a student conveys special interest in their teaching, so do not hesitate to sign up for a meeting! Advisers and teaching assistants make every effort to be available whenever you need them, and they are very approachable and passionate about helping you succeed. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Lauren: Dorm life is unique at Harvard in that all the freshmen live in Harvard Yard, the heart of campus and Cambridge. They are then sorted into houses at the end of their first year, in which they reside for sophomore year onward. It is a lot like Harry Potter in that there is a lot of house pride (and friendly competition with other houses), but you get to choose who you will live with! All freshmen eat together in Annenberg dining hall, but every house has its own dining hall, so everyone gets to know each other and to help foster house spirit. You are free to dine in any hall you like, so your community can be as large or small as you want! There are endless opportunities to meet others through study breaks, campus groups, intramural sportsyou name it! VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Lauren: I can honestly say that all academic programs are thoroughly represented and supported. I studied anthropology because I have always been interested in why and how we divide into our social groups and settings, and anthropology encourages an intimate, participant observation of the interactions that shape our cultural lives. I felt extremely supported and constantly motivated to pursue innovative and rigorous academic pursuits. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Lauren: There is not a whole lot of Greek life, though I chose to join a sorority. I found it easy to make friends due to the huge variety of interests represented on campus. There are over 400 official student groups, teams, and clubs (and that is just the official ones!), so you are bound to find people who share your passions. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Lauren: The Career Center is very helpful if you take the time to make your goals and interests clear to them. Hundreds of companies recruit every year on campus, from large investment banks and consulting firms to non-profits and graduate schools. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Lauren:Harvard unfortunately lacks a student union, but there are ample libraries of all sizes and resources scattered around campus. It is easy to find somewhere that suits your study style, whether that is dead silence or light chatter, bright lights or subtle ambiance, or even comfortable leather couches or large, sturdy tables. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Lauren: Harvard Square is a lot of fun, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to keep you busy. But after a while, you may become bored of the same activities and feel trapped in a bubble. That is what Boston is for! It is so close and easy to get to, and too many students forget about it. There is also more to Cambridge than Harvard Squarejust hop on the subway and you are one stop away from a different world! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Lauren: The undergraduate student body is roughly 7,000 people, so it is a medium-sized school. I was pleased that most of my classes were small seminars, which is true of most majors/fields of study. The largest classes are your introductory lectures, such as economics or math, but taking those is entirely dependent on your academic path. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Lauren: I loved writing my senior thesis with my favorite professor as my adviser and mentor. I got so much one-on-one time, and I was able to truly pick his brain, as well as get to know him as the awesome person he is. I am exceedingly proud of my thesis because I was so dedicated, and my professor made the experience of researching and writing over 100 pages fun! It taught me to believe in my abilities and never shy away from a daunting task, especially when you have the help of someone who truly wants you to succeed. Check out Laurens tutoring profile. Nucleus
Nucleus Nucleus: Nucleus in biology can be very well defined as a dense organelle present in most eukaryotic cells, typically a single rounded structure bounded by a double membrane, containing the genetic material. Nucleus can also be defined as a specialized, usually spherical mass of protoplasm encased in a double membrane, and found in most living eukaryotic cells, directing their growth, metabolism, and reproduction, and functioning in the transmission of genic characters. What is a Nucleus ? The nucleus is the controlling center of eukaryotic cell. It contains most of the genetic materials of the cell. It was first observed by Antonie von Leeuvenhoek in the lumen of RBCs and was named in the year 1833 by Robert brown who discovered it in plant cells. Structure of Nucleus: Nuclear Envelope: The nuclear envelope consists of two concentric membranes called the inner and outer membranes. The outer membrane is continuous with ER. In contrast the inner membrane carries unique proteins that are specific to the nucleus. A network of intermediate filaments present on the nuclear side of the inner membrane is known as nuclear lamina which is made up of lamin proteins providing mechanical support to the nucleus. Nuclear pores: The nuclear envelope contains nuclear pores for transport of macromolecules between cytoplasm and nucleus. Each nuclear pore is formed from an elaborate structure called nuclear pore complex. The proteins that make up the nuclear pore complex are known as nucleoporins. Nucleolar-organizing region (NORs): The nucleolus organizing region is a region of chromosome around which the nucleolus forms. In the human, the five chromosomes contain NORs, which can be identified as secondary constrictions on metaphase chromosomes. The position of secondary constriction in a chromosome is specific and species specific. As compared to secondary constrictions, the primary constrictions also called as centromere, attaches sister chromatids together. Chromosomes and chromatin: A chromatin is an organized structure of DNA and protein that is found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It contains a single dsDNA in coiled and condensed form. The basic difference between chromatin and chromosomes is that chromatin is less condensed and extended DNA while chromosomes are highly condensed DNA. The extent of chromatin condensation varies during the life cycle of the cell. In non-dividing as well as interphase stages of cell, most of the chromatin remain relatively de-condensed. The light staining, less condensed portions of chromatin are termed as euchromatin. This region is transcriptionally active and contains most of the transcribing genes. The darkly stained and highly condensed region of chromatin is termed as heterochromatin. This region is transcriptionally inactive. img alt=chromosomes and chromatin data-cke-saved-src=http://images.tutorpace.com/biology/nucleus_5.jpg src=http://images.tutorpace.com/biology/nucleus_5.jpg 518px;= height:= 254px;= Centromere: The constricted region of linear chromosomes is known as the centromere. Although this constriction is called the centromere, it is usually not located exactly in the center of the chromosome and, in some cases, is located almost at the chromosomes end. Telomere: Telomeres are specialized structures, which cap the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. It consists of a long array of short, tandemly repeated sequences. Origin of Replication: The origin of replication is a particular sequence in a chromosome at which replication is initiated. One chromosome contains multiple origins of replication. Chromosome number: All eukaryotic cells have multiple linear chromosomes. Every cell maintains a characteristic number of chromosomes. Depending upon the eukaryotic organism, the number of chromosomes varies from 2 to several hundreds. Chromosome number in different eukaryotic organisms: Species Haploid number of chromosomes Saccharomyces cerevisiae 16 Arabidopsis thaliana 06 Drosophila thaliana 04 Mus musculus 19 +X and Y Homo sapiens 22 + X and Y Functions of Nucleus: It is the prime control center of cellular activities. It controls the enzymatic activities. It controls the process of synthesizing proteins. It regulates the hereditary characteristics of an individual It participates in the process of cell division, differentiation and growth of cell. It controls the reliability of genes and its expression. Helps in the transport of RNA and DNA across the cell. Nucleolus is called ribosomal factory of the cell. Transcription takes place in nucleus.
